The first ever Child to Parent Abuse Awareness Day saw thousands across the UK finding out more about this often-hidden form of abuse.
Launched by Shropshire-based social enterprise PEGS, the day on Friday 14th October aimed to improve knowledge about CPA while also sharing information with parents, carers and guardians about where they could go to get support.
PEGS hosted their own event to mark the day at Shrewsbury College, with professionals from across the Midlands and beyond attending, alongside long-time supporters of PEGS.
And the PEGS team also encouraged the use of the hashtag #CPAAwarenessDay across social media, with hundreds of posts reaching many thousands of Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter users.
Founding Director Michelle John said: “We’re absolutely thrilled about how the Awareness Day went, and it’s definitely something we will be hosting annually from now on.
“It was fantastic to see the in-person support for the event, and the online support from across the UK. A huge thank you to those who took part, and to Shrewsbury Colleges Group – in particular, Michelle Dawes – for hosting us.”
The event also saw PEGS launch CPA Heroes – which enables parents to nominate someone who has gone above and beyond to assist them. This can either be a professional such as a GP, social worker, police officer or teacher, or a friend, family member, neighbour or colleague.
Nominations are open until 5pm on Wednesday 30th November, and anyone wishing to nominate should email [email protected] and include the name, organisation (if applicable), and address (if known) of their nominee, alongside their reason for putting them forward. They must also indicate if they’re happy for their name to be shared with their CPA Hero (it won’t be shared publicly).
Winners will be notified during December, and PEGS staff are exempt from being put forward.
PEGS works with parents, carers and guardians who are experiencing CPA from their child of any age (including adult offspring), as well as training frontline professionals, consulting on regional and national policy, and raising awareness.
