27% of people in the UK have instructed a conveyancing solicitor over the last 12 months, a new survey conducted by leading home moving comparison site Compare My Move has revealed.
The survey finds that 66% of those who used a conveyancing solicitor did so for a property purchase, while 51% enlisted the help of legal services for a property sale.
The average amount Brits on conveyancing solicitors over the past year is £1919.73.
However, costs vary significantly depending on location. Those living in London splash out the most, with an average of £2509.95.
The survey also uncovered some interesting data on the discrepancy between quoted fees and actual costs.
A quarter (25%) of respondents said that the cost of their conveyancing solicitor was slightly higher than initially quoted, while 37% reported that the price remained exactly the same as quoted.
When it comes to timelines, the average length of time taken from the start to the end of the property transaction was 3.52 months. The survey found that London was the quickest region, with an average of 2.92 months. These findings highlight how regional factors and the complexity of the property market can influence the speed of a transaction.
Dave Sayce, co-founder of Compare My Move, commented on the findings: “Our survey provides a fascinating look into the state of conveyancing in the UK, showing not only how much people are spending, but also how the costs and timelines vary depending on where they are in the country.
“It’s clear that conveyancing solicitors remain an essential part of the property transaction process, but it’s equally clear that people are looking for ways to save money and reduce stress during this important stage of moving. At Compare My Move, we’re committed to helping people save money by providing access to the best possible deals on conveyancing and other moving services.
“Here’s my five top tips for saving money on moving home:
- Look out for hidden fees: Always check for additional fees or costs that may not be included in the initial quote when booking removal companies or solicitors.
- Declutter before you move: The fewer items you have to move, the lower your removal costs will be. Take time to declutter and donate or sell items you no longer need.
- Compare conveyancing costs: Use a comparison site like Compare My Move to find the most affordable conveyancing solicitor for your needs. Shopping around can lead to significant savings.
- Time your move right: Moving mid-week or outside of peak seasons can save you money on removal services, as demand is generally lower during these times.
- Negotiate fees: Don’t be afraid to negotiate with your conveyancing solicitor. Some firms may be willing to offer discounts or flexible payment terms to attract clients.”
